About the role

As a Psychiatrist, you will provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, delivering culturally safe, evidence-based care within a multidisciplinary team. You will manage a moderate caseload with dedicated time for clinical documentation, professional development, case consultation, and supporting Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) staff, while contributing to the organisation's strategic goals.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Deliver culturally safe psychiatric assessment and treatment within a Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) framework.
Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, diagnose and develop evidence-based treatment plans.
Prescribe and monitor psychiatric medications and provide trauma-informed, recovery-oriented care.
Collaborate with Aboriginal Health Workers, multidisciplinary teams, families, Elders and community services to deliver holistic, person-centred care.
Manage complex mental health presentations, including co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
Prepare clinical reports, maintain accurate documentation, and coordinate referrals to support integrated care.
Formulate clear diagnoses in accordance with DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 diagnostic frameworks, utilising appropriate psychometric and clinical tools.
Liaise with GPs, allied health professionals, hospitals, and other services to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care and appropriate duty of care.
Other

Provide clinical oversight, consultation, and support to SEWB clinicians and other team members on complex psychiatric presentations.
Maintain clear and effective communication with all staff members across the team.
Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical records using Best Practice Software, in accordance with the Medical Board of Australia's Good Medical Practice guidelines and relevant privacy legislation.
Ensure all documentation — including clinical notes, review letters, referrals, and medication records — meets professional and legislative standards.
Keep up to date with Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) requirements relevant to psychiatry and report changes to the SEWB Manager as appropriate.

Culturally safe and responsive practice frameworks for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including the RANZCP Position Statement on Cultural Safety
About you

We require skilled and professional workers who can demonstrate building strong relationships and trust with the people they work with.

Essential

Current and unconditional registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA), with specialist qualification in Psychiatry (FRANZCP or equivalent).
Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), or eligibility for specialist registration in psychiatry.
Minimum of 5 years' post-fellowship experience in a clinical psychiatry setting.
Current prescribing authority and demonstrated experience in psychopharmacology.
Genuine interest in and commitment to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and an understanding of the social and emotional determinants of health in these communities.
Demonstrated ability to provide culturally safe, trauma-informed, and person/family-centred care.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across diverse ages, cultures, and social backgrounds.
Commitment to maintaining absolute confidentiality regarding client and organisational information.
Strong computer literacy and time management skills.
Desirable

Experience using the Best Practice software
Experience working in community-based, primary health care, or Aboriginal Community Controlled Health settings.
Understanding of the unique health needs and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including intergenerational trauma.
Experience with telehealth and remote service delivery.
Completion of cultural safety or Aboriginal health training.
