Company Overview

We are a customer focused, growth-oriented utility company that is devoted to our communities. We have a mission to improve life with energy and a vision to be the energy partner of choice. Our diverse culture sparks unique perspectives, opening doors to new ideas and possibilities. Based in Rapid City, South Dakota, we have over 2800 employees and serve 1.2 million natural gas and electric utility customers across eight states (South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Arkansas).

Company History

We’re pretty proud of our 130-year history, which started in the days of the prospectors, the faro dealers and the dance-hall girls. It goes back to the days when Deadwood Gulch was a lusty, drawling, rip-roaring mining town, back to the days of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok.

It’s gotten a lot calmer since then, but our growth continues to boom. Today, we operate in eight states, providing our customers with electricity and natural gas while also mining for coal and operating power plants.

The next 130-plus years will probably have more cars fueled by electricity and natural gas and fewer dance-hall girls and faro dealers. But whatever the future holds, we’ll be there, improving life with energy.
