Description
The Assistant Librarian supports daily library operations, including book circulation, shelving, and assisting students with research. This role encourages a love of reading by maintaining engaging book displays, helping students select materials that align with their interests, and occasionally leading storytime or read-aloud sessions. Additionally, the Assistant Librarian collaborates with the Librarian on collection development and ensures a welcoming, organized space conducive to reading and study. Ideal candidates will have strong organizational and communication skills, with preference given to those with master’s coursework in Library Science and familiarity with Montessori education. A passion for inspiring students and fostering a diverse, inclusive environment is essential.
Essential Functions
Manage book circulation, ensuring smooth check-out and return of materials
Organize and shelve books to maintain an orderly and accessible collection
Assist students in navigating both online and print resources for research purposes
Provide personalized reader’s advisory to encourage a love of reading
Oversee student laptop use to ensure proper and productive utilization
Support the librarian with collection development tasks, such as book processing and weeding
Assist classes visiting the library by guiding them through library procedures, and occasionally leading storytime or read-aloud sessions
Refresh and update book displays to keep the library visually engaging
Communicate with the librarian regarding any issues or concerns that arise in their absence
Uphold the library and school rules to maintain a respectful environment
Contribute to the growth and development of the library program
Foster an environment of creativity, innovation, and a passion for reading and learning
Maintain a welcoming, dynamic, and well-stocked library conducive to reading, studying, and research
Ensure the circulation system functions smoothly, promoting the timely return of materials for wider availability
Provide bibliographic and reference support for both students and teachers
Teach students how to effectively use library resources and tools
Promote the ethical use of information in all research and reading activities
Empower students to think critically, read enthusiastically, and conduct informed research
Instill a love of reading and learning in every student, ensuring equitable access to information for all
Perform additional duties as assigned to support the library’s operations
Requirements
Prior experience in a school or public library is preferred but not required
Dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment
Preference given to candidates with master’s level coursework in library science
Familiarity with Montessori education is a strong advantage
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in library science, information studies, or a related field strongly preferred
Additional qualifications in education are a plus
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent organizational and time-management abilities
Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on building positive relationships
