Job Title: Vice President of Development
Reports to: President and CEO
Department: Development
Classification: Exempt
Salary Range: $150,000 - $160,000
Job Summary
The James L. West Center for Dementia Care (the Center) seeks a dynamic and experienced Vice President of Development to lead and grow its fundraising efforts. This individual will be a strategic thinker with a proven track record in nonprofit development, including major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, corporate partnerships and grants.
As the Center’s lead fundraiser, the Vice President will manage a portfolio of donors and oversee all aspects of development strategy and execution. This role partners closely with the President & CEO, Board of Directors, and key staff to align fundraising initiatives with the Center’s mission and strategic goals.
Job Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
1. Collaborate with the President and CEO, Board of Directors, and Leadership Team to align fundraising strategies with organizational priorities.
2. Develop and implement an annual Development Plan with clear goals and benchmarks.
3. Partner with the marketing team to incorporate giving opportunities into the Center’s communications. Oversee creation of development specific pieces.
4. Lead the Development Committee of the Board, providing regular updates and actionable recommendations. Provide relevant updates and information to the Board of Directors.
5. Evaluate fundraising performance and adjust strategies to optimize results.
Development
6. Lead all fundraising initiatives, including annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, grants, and capital campaigns. Create new opportunities to grow and maintain donor base.
7. Cultivate and steward relationships with individual, corporate, and foundation donors as well as community partners.
8. Represent the Center in the community as a knowledgeable advocate for dementia care and education.
9. Ensure funding is available for capital improvements, financial assistance, and programmatic needs.
Operations & Administration
10. Supervise the Development Assistant and oversee donor database management, gift processing, and acknowledgments.
11. Maintain accurate donor records and ensure compliance with fundraising best practices.
12. Develop and maintain fundraising policies and procedures.
13. Assist in preparing the annual development budget and monitor resource allocation.
Supervisory responsibilities: Development Assistant and oversight of outside vendors as required.
Interaction: Other staff, board members, supervisory personnel, guests, donors, community members, volunteers.
Requirements
Qualifications
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree required; CFRE or Certificate in Fundraising Management preferred.
2. Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in nonprofit development, including major gifts and capital campaigns.
3. Demonstrated success in securing five-and six-figure gifts.
4. Experience working with boards and leading development committees.
Skills & Attributes
5. Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
6. Strong organizational and project management abilities.
7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Blackbaud or similar CRM preferred.
8. Knowledge of dementia-related issues and a passion for the mission is highly desirable.
9. Self-motivated, results-driven, and able to work independently.
Additional Requirements
10. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
11. Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
12. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
13. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and assist in emergency evacuations if needed.
14. Must meet health and physical requirements as outlined by the Center.
