Description
The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) contributes to and enhances the services and collaborative efforts of medical research at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine. In addition to the provision of basic husbandry for a wide variety of laboratory animal species, the veterinary staff and other highly experienced laboratory animal professionals of the IU School of Medicine LARC provide training, supplies, and specialized service support for medical research.Mission

The field of laboratory animal science has evolved substantially over the past 2 decades. We understand how the laboratory environment can both positively and negatively affect the results of research projects, and we recognize that an educated and empowered animal care team can be effective in working as an unofficial but critical member of the research team utilizing animal models. The LARC staff has deep experience in laboratory animal care and has achieved various levels of certification in laboratory animal science.
Job Summary
- Monitors animals' responses to anesthetics. Responds appropriately to anesthetic changes with appropriate knowledge of drugs and medical interventions.
- Performs euthanasia to animals according to American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Guidelines, under the direction of a veterinarian and other regulations, policies, or guidelines, and monitors animals' responses to anesthetics so that dosages can be adjusted.
- Executes prompt examination of animals reported with health problems.
- Adheres to all appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Research Compliance directives, accreditation standards, regulations and laws.
- Maintains accurate record keeping with electronic or paper medical records.
- Develops excellent veterinary technician skills.
- Maintains controlled substance inventory and related log books.
Qualifications
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
- Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or related field
Required
- 1 year animal care experience
Preferred
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) within 1 year from date of hire
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification

Working Conditions / Demands
The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Advertised Salary
$21.76 per hour. Candidates with additional experience or education may be offered a higher starting salary within the established range.
