Come join this engaging department for an amazing research opportunity in surgical education!
This 1 or 2-year, funded research position is designed to foster critical research skills and cultivate lifelong engagement in surgical education. This comprehensive research experience will enhance understanding of education methodology, promote innovation in surgical education, and enable the resident to contribute to the improvement of surgical training. The year long curriculum entails didactic and practical experiences in education research methodology and the opportunity to carry out projects with our state-of-the-art simulation center. Resident will have the opportunity to travel to regional and national meetings to present research. There is no clinical coverage expectation, but there is an opportunity for interested residents to work with current housestaff. Residents who have completed the PGY2 year of a surgical residency prior to starting are eligible. Salary is commensurate with level of training and the resident is eligible for benefits provided to housestaff.
The University of Illlinois College of Medicine Peoria Department of Surgery has a 70 year tradition of training top notch resident surgeons. The residency program has a champion mindset and strong history of early progressive autonomy that allows residents to enter directly into general surgical practice or compete for highly regarded fellowships across the country. Our JUMP Simulation Center maintains ACS-AEI accreditation as an education center of excellence. This 6-story building houses the OSF Innovation efforts on the same campus as the main clinical site: OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL, which is the flagship of our 16-hospital system serving central Illinois. Our diverse surgery faculty have advanced training in hepatobiliary, bariatric/MIS, surgical oncology, vascular, cardiothoracic, colorectal, breast, and trauma/critical care at our Level 1 center. We have successfully recruited a diverse group of faculty and residents to the program, which provides an ideal environment for educational research in the setting of clinical excellence. Peoria is a vibrant, riverside community with a surrounding community of about 400,000 equidistant between St. Louis and Chicago. There are multiple universities, performance venues, and sports teams. The hospital and surrounding community sit alongside the rolling hills next to the river with great views of downtown and the surrounding countryside.
