Description
This position typically reports to a Registered Nurse Manager, Physician, or other appropriate medical/nursing administrator in a student health services, medical clinic, hospital, or other type of medical/research unit. In addition to performing assessments of patients and providing medical, psychological, and social intervention or referral as deemed necessary by defined protocols, the Sr. level is also responsible for a major program, function or specialty area. A Sr. RN typically spends up to 50% of the time on this highly specialized function, which could involve managing areas such as clinic nursing manuals/protocols; serving as clinic document/forms coordinator; functioning as the medication dispensing/immunization clinic coordinator; or acting as the antigen clinic coordinator. These programs require specialized professional knowledge and experience beyond the basic RN training and experience. This position is responsible for ensuring adherence to hospital/clinic/departmental and university policies, and to established nursing procedures, standards, and practices. This is a high-level Professional non-exempt nursing position. This position is time-limited.This position requires licensure as a registered nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes, or eligibility to practice nursing in accordance with Chapter 64 B9, Florida Administrative Code and two years of nursing experience. - Manages a specialized program or function within the unit, such as antigen clinic; Physiology lab/esophageal lab; immunization clinic and medication dispensation clinic; Forms development/management for clinic; Nurse Reference/protocol manual management.
- Provides patient care in clinic and specialty areas per approved clinic protocols.
- Interviews patients to obtain accurate health history. Makes nursing diagnosis based on subjective and objective data collected. Implements appropriate treatment and referrals using established clinic protocols. Orders laboratory tests and diagnostic exams per approved protocols.
- Utilizes principles of Problem Oriented Recording (POR) and Subjective Objective Assessment Planning (SOAP) to diagnose and document patient records.
- Recognizes physical or emotional abnormalities that require immediate referral and takes appropriate action. Assists physician or nurse practitioner with special exams and procedures. Administers and records administration of medication.
- Counsels patients in self-care prevention, treatment, and follow-up of problems.
- Performs Telephone triage of difficult cases; follows-up with patients to assess responses to treatments.
- May oversee clinic and physician's area staff to ensure nursing objectives are met during peak hours.
- Provides guidance and training to lower level staff.
- Attends professional meetings, workshops and seminars to keep abreast of changes in nursing.
- Participates in research studies as assigned.
- Performs other professional nursing and related administrative duties as assigned.
