Description
Independence Township Parks, Recreation & Seniors (a nationally accredited department) is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic professional with a strong background in youth programming, day camp operations, and seasonal staff leadership to join our team. This position is the primary lead for our Youth Day Camp programs, one of the largest and growing programs of our department and serves up to 200 children daily throughout the summer, plus additional seasonal sessions during Spring and Winter Break. This role also includes day-to-day recreational programming duties that may include facilitating events, leagues, classes and programs for guests and residents of Independence Township. The Recreation Coordinator is required to work both independently, and in a team atmosphere, under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor. This is a high-energy, hands-on role ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments and wants to make a meaningful impact on the community.
Requirements
Lead Coordinator of Township Youth Day Camps: Plan, organize, and oversee all aspects of summer, spring break, and winter break camp programming—including but not limited to curriculum development, staff hiring and training, daily operations, camper safety, parent communication, and program evaluation.
Lead Coordinator of Youth Soccer Program: Plan, organize, and oversee all aspects of both spring and fall youth soccer leagues- including but not limited to registration, parent volunteer coach recruitment, roster formation, schedule creation, season operations, communications, and program evaluation.
Seasonal & Part-Time Staff Leadership: Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate seasonal camp staff and volunteers; youth sport officials, and Site Supervisors to foster a positive, team-oriented, and mission-driven culture.
Budget & Operations Management: Manage and monitor program budgets, track registrations, coordinate supplies, and maintain records for program-related expenditures and reporting. A successful candidate should also be able to recommend purchases and improvements through the budget process to meet program needs.
Community Collaboration: Build strong relationships with families, staff, vendors, and community partners to ensure a safe, inclusive, and enriching camp environment.
Department Support: In addition to leading camps, assist with general recreation programming—including clerical, events, classes, and leagues—throughout the year.
Stay abreast of current industry trends & practices in recreation and event management
Adhere to Township and Department guidelines, policies, and procedures
On-site supervision of programs on a regular basis or as needed for the success of the program
Process employee payroll bi-weekly
May work with independent instructors to develop a variety of recreational classes; maintains relationships with instructors, evaluates classes and submits instructor payments
Assist in CAPRA related projects for the department
Work closely with Community Relations Coordinator to update, advertise, and execute sponsorship packages for programs, classes, events and assist in Department wide marketing
Work in a lead role capacity on the annual Independence Fest event
Adhere to Township and Department guidelines, policies, and procedures
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A motivated, flexible, and creative team player with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
- Ability to successfully lead staff, good organizational skills with emphasis on detail.
- Knowledge of modern recreation principles, practices, equipment, and facilities to ensure an orderly operation of recreation programs
- Knowledge of objectives and philosophies of municipal recreation
- Knowledge of the recreation registration processes and ability to monitor participant registration numbers
- Strong verbal and written communication skills: ability to express ideas clearly and concisely
- Very detail oriented during proofreading processes and in project management, including reports and any correspondence
- Ability to work accurately and quickly under operational deadline; in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to understand and work with BS&A financial software
- Ability to understand and utilize Amilia SmartRec registration software
- Ability to use programs such as Dropbox, Canva, Sign Up Genius, When I Work and other online tools related to recreational programming
- Ability to take the lead in handling customer requests, complaints and issues as it relates to the programs supervised by the Recreation Coordinator
- Ability to furnish information to the public
- Ability to teach and maintain excellent customer service skills
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that may involve evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to simultaneously execute current programs, while planning 3-6 months in advance
- Ability to organize work and be able to work independently, as well as with a team
- Ability to exercise mature judgment & initiative in analyzing programs and recommending solutions.
- Must be productive, courteous, flexible, resourceful, and creative
- Ability to operate various pieces of office equipment, as well as some equipment during programs & events
- Must be professional in appearance
Working Hours:
Standard schedule: Monday–Thursday, 7:00 AM–5:30 PM
Additional evenings, weekend, and holiday hours required during program operational times including Fridays, Spring Break, summer season, and Winter Break timeframes and Independence Fest: Saturday prior to the 4th of July.
