Who Are We:
Western State Hospital (WSH) is a state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital operating since 1828 under the Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services. WSH is a 302-bed Joint Commission-accredited facility located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, within 30 minutes of major university towns. It is affiliated with the University of Virginia's Department of Psychiatric Medicine and provides a training ground for professionals from other colleges and universities in the fields of nursing, social work, psychology, and occupational therapy.
Western State Hospital is well regarded locally and across the state, has provided consultation or working tours to seven other states regarding our Psychosocial Rehab “mall” programs, effectively recruits and retains professional staff, and works actively within the hospital and with our community partners to produce good clinical and quality of life outcomes for individuals.
Western State Hospital maintains collaboration with UVA, training residents/medical students and recruiting psychiatrists into the public sector mental health. Faculty provide supervision to students and residents, participate in residency training/education committees, provide lectures to medical students on rotation, and participate in core didactic presentations in residency programs at UVA.
Purpose of position
- Conduct psychiatric assessments, diagnostic evaluations, medication management, psychotherapy, patient/family education, and required documentation.
- Lead and supervise multidisciplinary teams in developing and implementing treatment plans, provide clinical guidance, oversee milieu therapy, and coordinate discharge planning.
- Provide on-duty provider coverage (7a–7p weekdays), cross-coverage for absent providers, and clinical oversight/consultation for PMHNPs. There is the rare possibility of in-house coverage for on-duty shifts when regularly scheduled ODs are not available.
- Actively participate in Medical Staff meetings, assigned committees, required training, and ensure safety reporting and compliance with hospital bylaws.
- Supervise psychiatric residents, medical students, and participate in case conferences, lectures, and other teaching activities.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives and respond to changes or assignments directed by the Chief Medical Officer.
- Must be available for backup calls (onsite and offsite)
Requirements
Minimum Qualification
- Medical degree and completion of an ACGME-approved residency training in Psychiatry before the start of employment.
- Must possess an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia or obtain one before the start of employment.
- Current DEA controlled Substance registration/licensed or obtain one before the start of employment.
- Extensive psychiatric knowledge with strong clinical skills in assessment and treatment for acute forensic, civilly committed inpatient units, or extended care psychosocial rehabilitation services.
- Proven ability to lead and supervise a multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Experience in teaching and clinical supervision of medical trainees.
- Strong administrative skills to collaborate effectively with hospital units, Central Office, and external agencies.
- Familiarity with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) documentation requirements.
