Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
The Groundskeeper I is responsible for maintaining the grounds and landscaping at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel. This includes the care of trees, shrubs, turf, and seasonal plants. The role requires the safe and effective use of landscaping tools and equipment for tasks such as mowing, blowing, pruning, weeding, planting, and fertilizing. A basic understanding of irrigation systems and clock operation is also essential.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Safe and proper operation of landscape equipment.
- Understanding of application of weed control spray.
- Know proper use of safety equipment.
- Driving to perform work-related tasks
Physical Demands
- Walk, stand, stoop, bend, climb stairs, lift, squat, work with hands above the head.
- Work under adverse weather conditions (hot, cold, rain).
- Driving as needed to perform job related duties.

Landscaping and Grounds Care
- Perform routine landscaping tasks including pruning, mulching, mowing, planting, blowing, edging, tilling, watering, and fertilizing.
- Maintain turf health through aeration, grub treatment, and seasonal care.
- Install and propagate plants and turf as needed across campus grounds.
- Support maintenance of expanded landscaped areas such as Cobb House and Treanor.
Waste and Debris Management
- Manage trash flow during football home games and VIP events, including setup and cleanup.
- Transport organic debris to Bio Conversion facilities.
- Clean roof drains and ensure proper drainage around landscaped areas.
Equipment and Vehicle Maintenance
- Perform basic maintenance on landscape tools and equipment (e.g., oil changes, filter replacements, spark plug checks).
- Keep the landscaping shop organized, clean, and stocked with necessary supplies.
- Operate and maintain state vehicles in accordance with safety and usage guidelines.
Special Projects and Events
- Collaborate with Facilities Management Division (FMD) on infrastructure and landscaping projects.
- Provide increased support during football season and other high-demand periods.
- Assist with pressure washing and other special cleaning tasks as needed.
