Overview:
Reporting to the Fiber Construction (Operations) Manager or Project Manager, the Fiber Optic Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber optic networks to ensure high-quality connectivity for clients. This position involves extensive fieldwork and close collaboration with project teams to deliver reliable, high-performance installations that meet industry standards. The Fiber Optic Technician is critical in upholding the company’s reputation for excellence and contributing to its commitment to advancing digital infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
Install, splice, and test fiber optic cables in various indoor, outdoor, underground, and aerial locations.
Perform end-to-end testing using OTDRs (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers), fusion splicers, power meters, and network analyzers to ensure optimal signal quality.
Diagnose and resolve issues within fiber optic connections, addressing any signal loss or degradation in performance.
Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure network reliability.
Maintain accurate documentation of installations, repairs, test results, and project progress.
Collaborate with project managers, field supervisors, and team members to meet project specifications and timelines.
Educate clients on equipment usage and provide troubleshooting support as necessary.
Follow all applicable OSHA CFR, Industry Standards, and Company Policies.
Requirements
Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree or trade certification in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field is preferred.
Experience: 2–5 years of hands-on experience in fiber optics, telecommunications, or network infrastructure.
Preferred Certifications:
FBA OpTIC PATH Certification – Fiber Broadband Association’s certification reflects foundational fiber optic installation knowledge.
BICSI Installer 2 (Fiber) – Demonstrates advanced fiber optic installation, splicing, and troubleshooting skills.
Certified Fiber Optic Specialist (CFOS) from the Fiber Optic Association (FOA), including CFOS/O (Outside Plant), CFOS/T (Testing), and CFOS/H (FTTH) specializations.
OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety.
First Aid/CPR.
Other Certifications:
Relevant industry and manufacturer-specific training or certifications in fiber optic technology, such as those provided by leading fiber optic equipment and cable manufacturers. Certification demonstrating expertise in fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing is highly desirable.
Technical Skills:
Proficient with fiber optic equipment such as OTDRs, fusion splicers, and power meters.
Ability to read, discern, and apply technical documents such as construction drawings (CDs), fiber port matrices, and other industry-specific reports.
Solid understanding of fiber optic systems, including GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks), FTTH (Fiber to the Home), and LAN (Local Area Network) installations.
Familiarity with Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) standards, such as TIA-568 and TIA-942, is beneficial.
Physical Requirements:
Able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, lift and handle equipment up to 50 lbs., and work in confined or elevated spaces as needed.
Comfortable working on ladders or elevated structures when required by the installation environment.
Soft Skills:
Attention to detail and strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to ensure quality and accuracy in all tasks.
Effective communication skills for collaborating with clients and project teams.
Professionalism and a strong customer service orientation.
Travel requirements - this is a hybrid position, and openings are based in both Jeffersonville, Indiana and Augusta, Georgia. Travel is project dependent and up to 50% may be required.
