Description
Mission or Goal of Unit:The mission of the Department of Radiology is to create a world-class department by providing optimal care in a patient-centered environment, providing sub-specialty expertise, providing top quality imaging and therapeutic procedures, and to advance medical education and research, with a vision to create a department that is recognized as top tier nationally and internationally.
Chief Purpose of this position:
To provide leadership and management for enterprise-wide radiation safety including any VCU Health System site at which ionizing radiation is used and to provide leadership for the Division of Diagnostic Medical Physics in the Department of Radiology; managing physics faculty and staff; maintaining the Hospital Radiation Physics services; maintaining other radiation physics' contracts; overseeing research endeavors of faculty and staff; and planning and preparing educational presentations.
Position Responsibilities:
Clinical:
A)To provide leadership and management for the enterprise-wide radiation safety initiative including any VCU Health System site at which ionizing radiation is used. Specific duties include but are not limited to:
1) Working with the Chair of the Department of Radiology and the VCU Health VP for Professional Services in sustaining and enhancing an enterprise-wide service that ensures compliance with accepted guidelines and regulations regarding the safe use of ionizing radiation.
2) Establishing procedures and overseeing personnel to assess compliance with established radiation safety standards regarding the use of ionizing radiation throughout VCUHS.
3) Maintaining a database for all equipment that emits ionizing radiation and for all users of this equipment.
4) Overseeing the education of all users of ionizing radiation and affiliated staff in VCUHS.
5) Assisting in sustaining and enhancing the credentialing mechanism for users of ionizing radiation.
6) Supporting the work of the VCUHS Radiation Safety Committee.
B) To provide leadership and management for the Department of Radiology physicists.
C) To maintain the VCUHS Medical & Health Physics related service contracts and to ensure that all duties are fulfilled.
D) To maintain all other Diagnostic Medical Physics' contracts in addition to those noted in item c) above and to ensure that all duties are fulfilled.
Teaching:
To ensure that high-quality physics instruction is provided primarily to Radiology residents and to graduate students in the Medical Physics Program.
Research:
To foster interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research relationships throughout VCU in general and with the Department of Radiology.
Service:
Time and effort is expected to be devoted to physics service-related activities. This shall include School of Medicine, VCU Health and departmental committee work, professional growth, and other such assignments.
Required Qualifications:
- Appropriate medical physics or radiation physics graduate degree
- American Board of Radiology, American Board of Medical Physics, or equivalent in appropriate discipline such as Diagnostic Medical Physics, Radiologic Physics
- Proven experience in multiple facets of radiation safety and MRI safety
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Candidate must be eligible for permanent employment in the USA
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD or DSc
Familiar with:
- American College of Radiology accreditation programs
- Compliance requirements with State and Federal regulatory agencies
- Compliance with national and international standards for imaging equipment
