Description
The Director of the Circle Area Humane Society (CAHS) is a compassionate and dynamic leader responsible for overseeing all operations at our single-location shelter. This position requires a blend of strategic planning and hands-on work, with a strong focus on fundraising, team leadership, community engagement, social media oversight, and direct animal care. The Director works under the guidance of the Board of Directors and serves as the face of CAHS to the public, donors, partners, and municipalities.
Fundraising & Financial Development
- Develop and execute fundraising strategies, including individual giving, corporate sponsorships, annual campaigns, and special events.
- Identify and apply for grant opportunities to support shelter programs and operations.
- Maintain and grow the donor database; ensure prompt, professional donor communication and recognition.
- Collaborate with the Board to create and manage an annual operating budget aligned with organizational goals.
Leadership & Operations
- Supervise daily operations, ensuring the shelter is clean, safe, and aligned with animal welfare best practices.
- Hire, train, and manage shelter staff; support volunteers in coordination with the Volunteer Committee.
- Ensure that shelter procedures are followed consistently and effectively by all staff and volunteers.
- Participate in and oversee animal intake, assessments, and care routines; provide support with daily tasks as needed (feeding, cleaning, vet transport, etc.).
- Maintain compliance with all local, state, and federal animal care regulations and shelter standards.
- May be required to respond to Humane Agent calls as part of sworn Humane Officer duties.
Community Engagement & Partnerships
- Serve as the primary representative of CAHS to the public, municipalities, and partnering organizations.
- Foster relationships with local businesses, schools, veterinary practices, and rescue groups to expand CAHS visibility and impact.
- Attend community meetings and represent CAHS in contract discussions with municipal partners.
- Organize educational events and adoption drives to raise awareness and increase animal placements.
Social Media & Communications
- Direct staff or volunteers in managing CAHS’s website and social media platforms to ensure consistent, mission-aligned messaging.
- Oversee the creation of digital and print content that promotes adoptable animals, events, fundraising efforts, and community outreach.
- Ensure accuracy and timeliness of updates and promotions; approve messaging and strategies.
- Guide the production of quarterly newsletters and public reports summarizing shelter activities and goals.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; higher education in nonprofit management, public relations, or animal sciences is a plus.
- At least 2 years of experience in animal care, shelter management, fundraising, or community outreach.
- Proven ability to manage staff and volunteers, communicate professionally, and problem-solve under pressure.
- Familiarity with social media strategy and marketing, with the ability to supervise and guide others in execution.
- Ability to operate a computer and use Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
- Must be willing and able to complete training and certification to become a sworn Humane Officer as required by local regulations.
