Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under general supervision, the Dental Assistant 1 will assist the providers (faculty dentists, RDH¿s and staff dentists) in the Faculty Practice. This position also works closely with the other staff to ensure optimal patient care, outcomes and services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide chair-side dental assistance for the providers. Review the schedule in advance to determine efficient use of provider, patient and staff¿s time. (50%)
Take records, radiographs, manage the electronic health record as appropriate and organize the instruments for the appropriate procedures. (6%)
Maintain clinical area in accordance with OSHA regulations and clean clinical areas between patients. Prepare clinic for the day¿s schedule, including setting up clinical area, supplies and instruments. After procedures are completed; clean, sterilize and restock cubicles, instruments and equipment; including the collection and transport of all contaminated instruments to central sterilization for processing. Check equipment to ensure that it is in good working order (6%).
Organize and maintain the inventory of all clinical supplies (dental and office) and instruments. Prepare and submit pre-requisitions in order to obtain proper authorization to re-order materials and supplies as needed. (6%)
Review charts and prepare lab cases. Maintain records of laboratory work orders. Notify lab when cases are ready for pick up. Obtain, compile and reconcile laboratory invoices for monthly payments. (6%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCITONS
Provide administrator with assistance in the development and maintenance of patient record, filing and tracking systems. (5%)
Train interns and temporary help in regard to operational procedures. This includes patient assignment, as well as other duties related to daily operations and infection control. (5%)
Assist in performing dental charting for Faculty Practice patients. Order, distribute and account for medications. Mix chemicals that are needed on a case-by-case basis. (5%)
Serve as a back-up and lunch receptionist. (5%)
Assist Dental Hygienist with patient recall, cleaning of operatory and seating of patient when needed. (5%)
Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)
CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with cashiers, dispensary staff, receptionists and graduate department Specialty clinic personnel while performing job duties.
University: Little or no contact with other departments expected.
External: Daily contact with patients. Occasional contact with insurance companies and vendors as needed.
Students: Some contact with students related to patient care.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.
QUALIFICAITONS
Experience: A minimum of 3 months to 1-year dental assisting experience required.
Education/Licensing: High School education required. Dental Assistant certification. Current radiology license. Annual CPR certification.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Basic knowledge of computer software.
Basic knowledge of insurance codes and forms.
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This work is performed in a clinical setting and requires general knowledge of chemicals, blood borne pathogens and lab safety. May be required to use personal protective equipment, including standard lab coat, gloves, and safety glasses when appropriate.
