Position Summary
The Controller provides financial leadership for the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma, overseeing all accounting, reporting and compliance functions. This role safeguards the integrity of financial data, ensures adherence to nonprofit regulations and strengthens internal controls.
Working closely with senior leadership, the Controller develops budgets and forecasts that align resources with CFO’s mission. By leading the accounting team and building strong systems, the Controller ensures operational excellence that supports fundraising and philanthropy across Oklahoma.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Financial management & reporting
- Oversee accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll and grants management
- Prepare timely, accurate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB, IRS 990 and related)
- Coordinate preparation for annual audits and serve as primary liaison with external auditors
- Maintain systems to track restricted and unrestricted funds and donor reporting requirements
Budgeting & forecasting
- Lead annual budget development in collaboration with senior leadership
- Monitor budget-to-actual performance and provide regular analysis to leadership and program managers
- Assist in long-term financial planning and cash flow forecasting
Compliance & internal controls
- Develop and maintain strong internal control policies and procedures
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations, including IRS and charitable registration requirements
- Oversee grant and contract compliance, including financial reporting to funders
Leadership & team management
- Supervise, mentor and develop accounting staff
- Promote a culture of accountability, accuracy and continuous improvement
- Partner with leadership to support financial decision-making and strategy
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field
- Minimum of seven years of progressive accounting experience, with at least three years in nonprofit financial management
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Experience managing audits, budgets and financial reporting
- Proficiency with accounting software, including QuickBooks, Community Suite and Excel
- Demonstrated leadership, communication and organizational skills
Preferred:
- CPA, CPA candidate, CMA or MBA
- Experience with grants and fund accounting
- Knowledge of federal and state nonprofit regulations
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $90,000 - $125,000 DOE
- Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance
