The Commercial Meter Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, inspecting, calibrating, and repairing commercial and industrial natural gas metering systems. This role ensures accurate measurement and safe operation of gas meters while complying with regulatory standards and policies.
This position is considered Essential Personnel, meaning the incumbent must work during public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, and inclement weather.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Setting, removing, and repairing gas and water meters.
Installing and maintaining gas pressure and reducing regulators.
Installing, maintaining, and programming computerized gas correctors.
Testing commercial gas and water meters for accuracy.
Investigating gas and water issues and interacting with the public.
Designing and constructing meter sets, manifolds, and related piping.
Performing gas and water testing; calibrating equipment as needed.
Sizing water meters based on gallons per minute requirements.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
2+ years of experience in gas metering, field operations, or a related utility field.
Equivalent training and experience may substitute for minimum qualifications.
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid drivers license.
DOT Operator Qualifications (OQs) required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire (depending on assignment).
Additional certifications may be required based on area of focus.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior commercial/industrial work experience.
Technical certification in metering, instrumentation, or gas utility operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Gas pressure regulators, flow computers, and meter proving systems.
Meter changeouts.
Safety procedures and practices.
Leak detection for gas/water meters.
Skills in:
Operating hand/power tools and diagnostic equipment.
Communication and customer service.
Installing, testing, troubleshooting, and upgrading gas/water meters.
Documenting test results.
Abilities to:
Read and interpret blueprints.
Adhere to safety policies, PPE requirements, and regulations.
Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Operate assigned vehicles.
