Clinical Fellowship in PET Imaging of
Neurologic and Psychiatric Disorders
Dr. Robert Innis at the NIMH-NIH seeks a PGY4 or recent graduate of a psychiatry residency program for a clinical research fellowship in PET radioligand imaging of neurologic and psychiatric disorders. The laboratories of Drs. Innis and Pike use state-of-the-art PET techniques and newly developed radioligands to study molecular/protein targets in the brain. New radioligands are developed and evaluated with PET imaging of animals (rodents and monkeys), extended to healthy participants, and then to patients with neuropsychiatric disorders.
The salary for the fellowship will be competitive and based on postgraduate year of training. Fellows may apply for an educational loan repayment program that provides up to $50,000 per year tax free.
The training available to the fellows includes being Principal Investigator (and subsequent first author) for human studies as well as training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), given that all human studies require an Investigational New (IND) application from the FDA. Such broad training markedly increases subsequent job opportunities in academia, industry, and regulatory affairs.
The laboratory has ongoing clinical collaborations with other NIH investigators, including Drs. Carlos Zarate (treatment-resistant depression), Avindra Nath (Long COVID), David Goldman (alcohol use disorder), and Paul Parcon (dementias).
The laboratories of Dr. Innis and Pike emphasize training to improve communication skills, both written and oral, through frequent presentations of research at weekly meetings. Fellows will attend one to two international research meetings per year.
The Fellowship will begin in 2026 (typically July) and last three years. The applicant must have a US medical license. Applicants who are residents in psychiatry can come to the NIMH for an approved PGY4 year.
