Description
Stoel Rives LLP has an immediate opening for a Business Development Manager in either our Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, or Seattle office. (Hybrid with 3 days in-office and 2 days remote.) Reporting to the Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer, the Business Development Manager plays a critical role in developing and managing the business development and marketing strategy for assigned practices, industry groups and offices. These strategies will be focused on driving new business from both existing clients and prospects and raising the profile of the firm as a whole. This role is expected to work proactively with attorneys and administrative personnel across the firm as well as all members of the Business Development Department to foster a culture of business development and marketing collaboration across office, practice and industry group lines.
This position is anticipated to take responsibility for the Technology industry group and the Litigation and Intellectual Property practice groups; however, candidates with other business law firm experience are encouraged to apply.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop formal marketing and business development plans for assigned industry and practice groups by leveraging the firm wide strategic plan.. As appropriate, assist attorneys with development of individual business plans that clearly support the industry or initiative plan. Once plans are in place, continually evaluate them and track ROI on initiatives.
- Develop and maintain a robust understanding of supported groups and the firm’s clients; acting as trusted advisor to group leads and lawyers, including BD coaching for a portfolio of priority lawyers.
- Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the experience within assigned groups to identify potential synergies for existing clients as well as new prospects. Collaborate with Competitive Intelligence Manager to identify client targeting criteria and identify prospective client targets.
- Develop and deliver tailored and responsive pitch and proposals to qualified prospects to win new clients and expand existing clients.
- Position and draft appropriate messaging in sales collateral and marketing materials, including Chambers USA, develop matter and practice descriptions that are appropriate for use in pitches, press releases and on firm website as appropriate.
- Monitor legal and industry trends in order to proactively identify ways for the group to differentiate themselves within the marketplace and gain market share. Regularly communicate with the firm’s other business development professionals and arrange for and support appropriate cross-marketing efforts.
- In collaboration with the firm’s Marketing Operations team, ensure that content and experience is leveraged across distribution channels including internal communications and social media.
- Support the firm’s client interview and client feedback process through identification of key clients for interview, and facilitating process communication with relationship lawyers.
- Develop and maintain relationships with business associations and industry organizations to identify optimal engagement including membership, sponsorship, speaking and leadership opportunities.
- Curate and oversee educational, networking, and client appreciation events in alignment with assigned group business plans and go-to-market strategy.
- Develop and manage business development budgets for assigned groups, including monitoring individual lawyer business development spending.

Requirements
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree required and at least 5 years in a professional services industry marketing or business development role. Law firm experience strongly preferred.
ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES
- Solid team player with excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work successfully with attorneys, clients, staff, community, and vendors.
Strong client service attitude highly desired. - Knowledge and proficiency with Foundation, InterAction, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong project and time management skills with outstanding writing and grammar skills.
- Must be able to multi-task with strong project management aptitude.
- Adaptable, flexible, and curious mindset - willing to learn new systems and contribute to continuous improvement culture.
- Must possess strong leadership skills with the ability to work independently and take initiative while collaborating well with other team members.
- Some travel required (3-4 trips per year).
