Position Overview:
The James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs. This senior-level role is responsible for strategic curriculum development, oversight of student and resident affairs, managing advanced education programs and admissions, and advancing other key academic initiatives.
Reporting directly to the Dean and serving on the Dean’s Leadership Council, the Associate Dean plays a pivotal role in shaping a high-quality, student-centered curriculum that aligns with accreditation standards and institutional goals. The position is critical to fostering a dynamic academic environment that promotes student success, faculty and staff development, and innovation in dental education.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Leadership
Oversee admissions for the pre-doctorate programs, including tours, interviews, data analysis, etc.
Provide strategic leadership for the planning, implementation, and continuous assessment of the DMD curriculum to ensure academic excellence.
Oversee academic policy development and enforcement, ensuring compliance with institutional standards and CODA accreditation requirements.
Serve as a liaison to university-wide academic leadership groups and represent the college in internal and external academic initiatives. As well as serving on the following JBE CDM committees:
o Admissions Committee
o Educational Support Services Committee
o Curriculum Committee
o Academic Promotion and Professionalism Committee
o Student Support Services Committee
o Faculty Search Committees
o Dean’s Leadership Council
o Other committees as assigned
Lead accreditation and institutional assessment efforts, promoting data-driven quality improvement across all academic programs.
Manage academic affairs resources and budgets in alignment with the school’s strategic priorities.
Ensure Academic and Student Affairs Office successfully hosts and coordinates annual events including but not limited to: Honors Convocation and Hooding, White Coat Ceremony and Celebration, admissions banquets, student led initiatives and events.
Represent the Dean and Senior Associate Dean on an as needed basis.
Attends Deans/Students Meetings to address student concerns.
Present as needed at orientation, faculty meetings, university meetings, and more with updates regarding recruitment, policy changes, events, etc.
Faculty Development and Administrative Oversight
Collaborate with faculty, department chairs, and administrative leaders to maintain curricular relevance, innovation, and alignment with evolving dental education trends.
Annual review of academic policies and procedures in student handbook. Propose and present revisions as necessary to Dean’s Leadership Council.
Supervise academic units including advanced education programs, Assistant Dean of Student Success Office, Academic and Student Affairs staff, Office of Student Recruitment and Alumni Affairs, and other offices supporting student and resident affairs.
Contribute to faculty recruitment, mentoring, and professional development to support excellence in teaching and academic leadership.
Review outcomes from recent graduate exit interviews and collaborate with department chairs to implement changes.
Participate in teaching and/or clinical practice in accordance within area of expertise and school needs.
Manage and oversee faculty calibration and annual faculty retreat.
Experience & Educational Background:
DDS, DMD, or equivalent degree
Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in academic dentistry, including leadership roles.
Academic and Scholarly credentials commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
Demonstrated expertise in curricular design, management, and educational leadership.
In-depth knowledge of CODA standards, policies, and accreditation processes.
Experience in tracking student progression and effectively managing complex academic situations.
Proven ability to lead teams, programs, or departments in a collaborative and collegial environment.
