- Analytical Chemistry Tenure Track Faculty
Description
The Evergreen State College seeks a full-time regular* faculty member with expertise in analytical chemistry eager to teach innovative and interdisciplinary academic offerings starting in Fall 2026. We are also seeking another colleague to teach physical chemistry.
The successful candidate must be able to teach: analytical chemistry at intermediate and advanced levels; general chemistry; and chemistry as part of a general education within team-taught broadly themed interdisciplinary offerings. The ideal candidate for this position would show the potential for collaborative teaching with colleagues in other sciences, as well as in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to supporting undergraduate research projects. Candidates with an interest in teaching instrumentation methods are desirable. We seek candidates with experience teaching diverse and underrepresented populations.
Evergreen is located in one thousand acres of forested land on the shoreline of the southern tip of Puget Sound, which provides bountiful potential for teaching and research opportunities in analytical chemistry. Many Evergreen students are particularly excited about applying chemistry to environmental questions.
Evergreen recently invested over $2 million in scientific instrumentation, demonstrating the college’s commitment to undergraduate science education and hands-on research training. Our research grade instrumentation includes a 400 MHz VT FT-NMR, GC-MS, ICP-MS, FT-IR (with microscope and ATR), UV-VIS, polarograph, discrete analyzer, C/H/N auto analyzer, mercury analyzer, and UHR FE-SEM with EDS and Cryo-Prep systems. The college also has fostered partnerships between state, local, and tribal agencies that can lead to research opportunities.
In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to advise and mentor students and participate in Evergreen’s system of shared governance.
*Regular is equivalent to tenure-track at other colleges. A complete description of the continuing contact and conversion process can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, article 11.
We are only able to accept applications submitted through the Evergreen State College hiring portal. Applications and materials submitted to ACS portal will not be considered.
Requirements
Most faculty will teach in full-time, team-taught, 16-credit programs connected by a particular theme or line of inquiry. Faculty are generally responsible for evaluating 25 students/quarter, though their programs may include up to 50-75 students, depending on the size of their teaching team. This arrangement allows for in-depth, interdisciplinary and experiential learning, and the building of strong learning communities. Faculty are also responsible for advising students as they reflect on their learning process, develop a pathway of study, and formulate their own areas of concentration.
Our teaching is student-centered, which means we are interested in helping students develop strong skills in critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaborative work. Because over 80% of our students come from underserved and marginalized groups, we are particularly invested in approaches to teaching that emphasize diversity and equity, that provide opportunities for challenge and growth, and that foster a learning environment where all are welcome and all can learn from each other.
A complete list of faculty responsibilities can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (follow the Collective Bargain Agreement link at https://www.evergreen.edu/offices-services/faculty-hiring/benefits).
